Bringing practical experience into sector dialogue

Developing insect rearing requires an understanding of technology, markets and the regulatory framework. Belinda Animals contributes experience from pilot work to discussions about applications and the conditions needed for sector development.

Biotech Future Forum 2023

At the second international Biotech Future Forum, held on 19–20 October 2023 at the Palace of Serbia in Belgrade, Belinda Animals was one of ten companies in the innovation exhibition. The conference was organised by the Government of the Republic of Serbia and its Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution, in cooperation with the World Economic Forum and UNDP.

Together with the Institute for Biological Research “Siniša Stanković”, we presented the TeM incubator and live Tenebrio molitor colonies at our stand. The stand was visited by a high-level delegation led by then Prime Minister Ana Brnabić, including the Minister of Science, Technological Development and Innovation Dr Jelena Begović and many representatives of the Government, international organisations and partners.

This visit established contact with the Government of the Republic of Serbia. Consultations with the Prime Minister’s office followed on the regulatory position of insect rearing and its use in animal nutrition, and the practical experience we shared fed into the preparation of the amendments to the rulebook adopted in December 2023.

The 2023 regulatory context

Amendments published in Serbia’s Official Gazette 118/2023 included Tenebrio molitor among farmed insect species from which processed animal protein intended for animal-feed production may be produced. The regulation was adopted by the competent authorities; in the consultations that followed the Biotech Future Forum, we contributed practical experience from pilot rearing.

This describes the 2023 regulations. For current requirements, check the regulations in force or contact us.

International visibility

The announcement of the 2024 World Circular Economy Forum in Brussels included the Belinda Animals and IBISS solution in a dedicated session on using insects to reduce waste. This provides a public reference for the topic’s relevance to international professional exchange.
